Use this UK bed-size and room-measuring guide to compare standard mattress dimensions, check a bed frame’s full footprint and plan a comfortable layout before you order.
A new bed can change how a bedroom feels, but choosing by mattress size alone can lead to a tight fit. Use this UK-focused guide to compare standard mattress dimensions, measure the full bed frame and check the route into the room before ordering.
These are the standard UK mattress dimensions commonly used for adult beds. The figures describe the mattress, not the outside measurements of the frame.
| UK mattress size | Mattress dimensions |
|---|---|
| Single | 90 × 190 cm |
| Small double | 120 × 190 cm |
| Double | 135 × 190 cm |
| King | 150 × 200 cm |
| Super king | 180 × 200 cm |
You can browse our single beds, small double beds, double beds, king-size beds and super-king beds. If you are replacing a mattress, check the size shown for your existing frame before you choose from our mattress collection. UK and European sizes can differ, so do not rely on the size name alone.
A bed frame can take up more floor space than its mattress. Headboards, footboards, side rails and built-in storage may add to the overall width or length. Check the frame’s listed dimensions, then measure the available floor area in your room.
Mark the planned footprint with masking tape or measured string. Include the space you need to walk around the bed and use bedside tables, wardrobes and drawers. Check that bedroom doors and furniture doors can open without hitting the frame. For a storage bed, consider how you will reach the storage: an ottoman mechanism lifts upwards, while drawers need room to slide out. Explore our storage beds, including the Werner wingback bed with ottoman storage.
Measure the doorway, hallway, stairs, turns and landing between the entrance and bedroom. Compare those measurements with the product’s delivery information, and ask the retailer if you are unsure whether the components will pass through the route. A bed that fits the room still needs to get there.
Before ordering, confirm the frame and mattress use the same UK size, compare the frame’s external measurements with your floor plan, and check your access route. If you are choosing a new mattress as well, browse our mattresses, including the Pillow Top Pocket Sprung Mattress.
A few minutes with a tape measure can help you choose a bed that suits both the room and the way you use it.
