Small Double Beds: The Ideal Bed for Compact Bedrooms & Guest Rooms

, by Asad Shabbir, 6 min reading time

Brief

A small double bed offers more sleeping space than a single while taking up less room than a standard double. This makes it a popular choice for teenagers, solo adults, guest rooms and bedrooms where every centimetre matters.

Small double beds are also sometimes described as three-quarter beds, although “small double” is the more widely used term in the UK.

What Size Is a UK Small Double Bed?

A standard UK small double mattress measures:

120 cm wide × 190 cm long
4 ft wide × 6 ft 3 in long

A small double is 30 cm wider than a standard single but 15 cm narrower than a standard double.

The complete frame may be wider or longer depending on the thickness of its side rails, headboard, wings and footboard

Who Should Choose a Small Double?

A small double bed can be an excellent choice for:

  • One adult who wants more room than a single
  • Teenagers who have outgrown a single bed
  • Guest bedrooms
  • Small main bedrooms
  • Studio flats
  • Rental properties
  • Couples who only use the bed occasionally

Two adults can sleep on a small double, but each person receives approximately 60 cm of mattress width. For regular use by a couple, a standard double, king or super king will usually provide more personal sleeping space.

Choosing the Correct Mattress

A UK small double frame normally requires a 120 cm × 190 cm mattress. A European double mattress is usually a different size, so do not assume that mattresses described as “double” are interchangeable.

Check the mattress measurements carefully before completing your purchase.

Why Choose a Small Double Instead of a Single?

The additional 30 cm of width can make a noticeable difference for someone who changes position frequently or simply prefers more room. At the same time, the bed remains compact enough for many rooms that cannot comfortably accommodate a full double.

This can leave valuable space for:

  • Bedside tables
  • Wardrobes
  • Dressing tables
  • Desks
  • Storage furniture
  • Clear walking routes

Small Double Storage Beds

A small double storage bed can be especially useful in compact bedrooms. Drawer divans provide divided storage, while ottoman beds use much of the area beneath the mattress.

When choosing drawer storage, make sure there is enough room beside the bed to pull the drawers out. Where side clearance is limited, an end-opening ottoman may be more practical.

Measuring Before You Buy

Do not measure the mattress area alone. Check the external frame dimensions supplied for the exact product.

You should also consider whether the bed can be delivered through the property. Large upholstered headboards may be difficult to carry around tight staircases or through restricted doorways.

Is a Small Double Right for Your Bedroom?

A small double provides a useful balance between comfort and space efficiency.

It is wider than a single, more compact than a double and available with many of the same design and storage features found on larger beds.

For solo sleepers and growing teenagers, it can be a comfortable long-term choice without overwhelming a smaller bedroom.
