UK Upholstered Bed Fire-Safety Labels: What Buyers Should Know

, by RSB Furniture, 2 min reading time

A UK buyer’s guide to fire-safety labels on upholstered beds, including what changed in October 2025 and which product labels remain relevant.

When you compare upholstered beds, you may see different labels on the frame, headboard or product packaging. UK fire-safety rules changed in 2025, so a hanging display tag and a permanent furniture label no longer mean the same thing. Here is what to check before you order.

Which UK rules cover upholstered beds?

The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, as amended, set fire-safety requirements for domestic upholstered furniture supplied in the UK. Upholstered bed components can include the headboard, footboard and side rails.

Mattresses and bed bases are treated separately from those upholstered parts. Their fire-safety requirements are not shown by the same permanent furniture label, so check information for each component rather than assuming one label covers the whole bed.

Display tags and permanent labels are different

From 30 October 2025, the amended UK rules removed the requirement for manufacturers to attach a display label—often called a swing tag—to new products. The amendments did not remove the requirements for permanent labels on relevant upholstered furniture.

A missing swing tag on its own is therefore not proof that an item fails to meet the rules. Where a permanent label is required, it should remain attached to the furniture. Depending on the label, it can identify the first UK supplier and a batch or product code, and give information about the fillings or covering materials.

What to check when choosing a bed

First, identify which parts are included in the bed you are buying. A headboard, footboard and upholstered side rails are different components from a separately supplied mattress or base. Ask the retailer if you cannot tell which product-specific information applies to your chosen configuration.

If the bed has a permanent label, leave it in place and keep your order details. For a label or compliance question, ask the retailer about the exact model and components rather than relying on a general description or a display tag alone.

This guide explains the UK labelling changes in general terms; it does not replace information for a particular bed or its separate components.
