A practical UK guide to council collections, recycling-centre checks, reuse, retailer uplift and choosing an authorised waste collector for an old mattress.
Getting rid of an old mattress is not the same everywhere in the UK. Your local council’s waste pages explain which routes are available in your area, what they accept and whether you need to book or pay. Check before loading a mattress into a car or putting it out for collection.
Old mattresses count as household waste. In England and Wales, GOV.UK says most councils offer special collections for large items and may charge. Ask your council specifically whether it accepts mattresses and how they should be presented.
In Scotland, Zero Waste Scotland says mattresses can be recycled at many household waste recycling centres, but advises checking with your council before visiting. In Northern Ireland, local councils can arrange bulky-item collections. Across the UK, accepted items, fees, booking steps and collection instructions can vary, so follow the current guidance for your own address.
If the mattress is still in a condition someone else could use, ask a local charity or furniture-reuse organisation whether it accepts mattresses and what condition it requires. Confirm collection or drop-off arrangements before transporting it.
If you are in Scotland and plan to donate or pass on a mattress, Zero Waste Scotland advises keeping its fire-safety label attached because reuse organisations may need it to resell the item. Check the chosen organisation’s own current requirements. For background on labels, see our UK guide to fire-safety labels on upholstered beds.
Before ordering a new one, ask the retailer whether it offers removal of your old mattress for your postcode, whether there is a charge and how collection is booked. Do not assume old-mattress removal is included with a new-mattress delivery.
You can compare options in our mattress collection. If you have a question about our products or delivery, contact our team.
Before handing your mattress to a private clearance or waste-collection business, check that it is legally authorised to take household waste. The relevant registration check depends on where you live: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have different registers. GOV.UK warns that you could be fined if you give waste to someone who is not legally allowed to take it and it is later dumped illegally.
Keep your booking details and follow the collection instructions. Do not leave a mattress beside bins or on the pavement unless your council or agreed collector has told you to do so.
